Hoiet Dewayne Davis was born July 20, 1958 in Thomas, Oklahoma to Edward and Shirley Ellen (Callaway)Davis, and departed this life on January 25, 2017 at his home near Watonga, Oklahoma at the age of 58.
Hoiet worked hard all his life. When he was young he and his brothers helped, their dad run his milk route delivering milk to the Watonga Cheese Factory, running trap lines and working in the fur shed. He worked at the Davidson case lumber yard while he was in high school, then went on to work for J.L. Matli doing farm work. At the age of 19 Hoiet bought a milk truck and milk truck route and began delivering milk to the Watonga Cheese Factory for fifteen years. The last two years he ran the route he also worked parttime for TH Rogers Lumber Co.
After the milk route Hoiet Worked for Barrett Pipeline out of Thomas, Ok until they shut down. Hoiet then worked at H&B Gypsum for JC and Pat Howry, then worked for a short time at Flying W for Wilford and Kyle Widney.
Hoiet’s last fulltime job was for USG Where he ran the planer in the quarry until his health failed him and he couldn’t return to a full-time job. After USG Hoiet worked for Steve’s Welding owned by Steve Gassen until two years ago, when his health declined further and he was no longer able to work.
Hoiet loved hunting, fishing, noodling, and spending nights in the woods coon hunting or hunting wild hogs, running his trap lines and working in the fur shed during the winter months and he passed that love on to his children Jerod, Ethan, and Joeie.
When Hoiet was in his 20’s he started spending weekends going to coon dog trader, swapping coon dogs and tall tales with other hunters and traders like himself. It was at the dog traders that Hoiet traded for his first mule to coon hunt off. Beauty was to small to hunt so he gave her to his wife, Betty, and got himself a larger mule. This started a new hobby for Hoiet. He still bought, sold and traded his coon hounds but now he also bought, sold, and traded mules. Hoiet found a good team of mules through his mule’s trades so he built a covered wagon with rubber tires and he and his wife and boys would attend parades in Canton, Longdale, Thomas, Hinton, Geary and Minco. He, along with his son, Jerod, would get together with other horse and mule teams owners and go for a drive in the country for the weekend. Unfortunately, he had to sell his beloved team of mules, Judy and Alice, because he couldn’t find pastures for them due to a drought before his daughter Joeie could participate in the outings. The last few years he enjoyed spending time with Joeie at the rabbit and chicken auctions.
Hoiet also ran a small fur buying enterprise with his sons so that the local hunters and traders would have a place to sell their furs. He was still working in his fur Shed the day before he passed away.
